Work Experience

For my first work placement, I decided to go to Avoca's "Birdcage Cafe". I will be working there for a total of ten weeks!

I start work at 10:30 every Wednesday. Usually, my first job in the morning is to keep the jam topped up and to go down to the bakery to get fresh scones whenever the cafe is running low.

I get a half an hour break at 11:30 or 12, where I am provided with free food and drinks! The food      in the cafe is so gorgeous, I couldn't believe my luck when I was told that I could have free break        and free lunch every week!

After break, I mainly work on the savory food counter. Here, I serve customers, place hot food            orders to the kitchen, heat food in the microwaves, top up salads and serve soup etc.
I really enjoy this part of the day because I can interact with other people and work with the food.

At 2:30, I get to have my lunch. Once again, I am provided with free food and drinks! When I             finish my lunch, I go for a wander downstairs with any extra time I have.

After lunch, I might be on the savory food again, or I could be on the cake stand. If I'm not on             either of these, I work on the floor, cleaning tables etc., or else I'm helping out with unloading             boxes of milk, napkins etc.

My day ends at 5 and I hate leaving because it is so much fun, but after a day of standing and               walking around non-stop, I'm happy enough to take off my gloves and say goodbye to everyone!

Millennium Development Goals

In religion class at the moment, we are learning about Millennium Development Goals.
Millennium Development Goals, or MDGs, are eight internationally agreed goals and targets to reduce global poverty by 2015.

The eight MDGs are as follow:

  1. Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty.
  2. Achieve universal primary education.
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women.
  4. Reduce child mortality.
  5. Improve maternal health.
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability.
  8. Develop a global partnership for development.
We were divided into groups and each group were given a specific MDG to do a project on. My group got MDG #7; Ensure environmental sustainability. We have completed a PowerPoint presentation on environmental sustainability and we will be doing a poster on it soon.

I am really enjoying learning about the MDGs! I think the topic is interesting and very relevant to us.

Here is a short video  on all of the MDGs. It will explain the entire concept to you very simply!
